Rappenloch and Alplochgorge

The Rappenloch Gorge to become accessible for walkers again

A new tunnel and other improvements are being planned

In May, 2011 a massive rockfall buried a section of the Rappenloch Gorge. Since then the Gorge has been closed to the public. Preparations are underway to re-open the paths and footbridges for strollers and hikers. The planned improvements will make the Rappenloch even safer and more attractive than before.

A new footpath tunnel will be cut as a detour around the rockfall area. Branching off from this tunnel a subterranean gallery will lead directly to a protected platform, where visitors can enjoy a spectacular, unforgettable view over the Gorge. There will be information stations which provide insights into the natural history and geology of this natural wonder, as well as background material about the rockfall.

Construction work is scheduled to begin soon, and will be completed this year. The tunneling will be carried out using classical mining technologies and without large construction equipment, which would entail considerable outlays in expenses and time. In 2013 the imposing Rappenloch will be open to the public as a newly designed, fully walk-through excursion destination - one of Dornbirn's truly unique attractions!

A visit to the Gorge is possible in spite of the temporary closure

This local recreation area between Gütle, Rappenloch, Alploch and the Karren Cable Car can also be visited while construction activities are in progress. There is a short detour around the slide area - with dramatic, interesting views of this epochal natural event. At the upper end of the Rappenloch the walking path continues on around the small Lake Staufen. Via footbridges and paths, the walker then enters into the next natural phenomenon, the Alploch Gorge - a favourite among experts in the field.

The Dornbirn Tourist and City Marketing Office offers guided tours on a regular basis up to the rockfall area, as well as to Lake Staufen and the Alploch Gorge.

There is regular bus service, on the Dornbirn-Ebnit line, between Gütle and the entrance to the Alploch Gorge. The bus ticket is also included in the new "Alploch Ticket" on offer at the office of the Karren Cable Car.
